GST Filing Dates in India

A complete guide to compliance timelines. Whether you need to track gst filing dates monthly or quarterly, stay updated with the latest deadlines and avoid penalties.

Understanding GST Return Deadlines

Keeping track of gst filing dates in india is critical for every registered business. Depending on your aggregate turnover and the scheme you have opted for, your business will need to file returns either on a monthly or a quarterly basis. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) system involves multiple forms, the most common being GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

Failure to adhere to these timelines can result in compounding interest and late fees. Below is a detailed breakdown of the gst filing dates every month and quarter.

GST Filing Dates Monthly (Regular Taxpayers)

For taxpayers with an aggregate annual turnover exceeding ₹5 Crore, or those who have voluntarily opted out of the QRMP (Quarterly Return Monthly Payment) scheme, returns must be filed every single month.

Form Type Description Due Date (Every Month)
GSTR-1 Details of outward supplies of goods or services. 11th of the following month
GSTR-3B Summary return and payment of tax. 20th of the following month
GSTR-7 Return for authorities deducting tax at source (TDS). 10th of the following month
GSTR-8 Return for E-Commerce Operators collecting tax (TCS). 10th of the following month

Tracking gst filing dates monthly is essential for large enterprises to maintain smooth input tax credit (ITC) flow for their buyers.

GST Filing Dates Quarterly (QRMP Scheme)

To ease the compliance burden on small businesses, the government introduced the QRMP scheme. Taxpayers with an aggregate annual turnover of up to ₹5 Crore can opt into this scheme to take advantage of gst filing dates quarterly.

Under QRMP, while taxes are paid monthly (using PMT-06), the actual GSTR-3B return is filed quarterly. Taxpayers can also use the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) to upload B2B invoices in the first two months of the quarter.

Form Type Quarter Covered Due Date
IFF (Optional) Month 1 & 2 of the Quarter 13th of the following month
GSTR-1 Quarterly Summary 13th of the month following the quarter
GSTR-3B (Category X*) Quarterly Tax Payment 22nd of the month following the quarter
GSTR-3B (Category Y**) Quarterly Tax Payment 24th of the month following the quarter

* Category X States: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep.

** Category Y States: Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh, Delhi.

Annual Returns

In addition to monthly and quarterly filings, registered businesses must also file an annual return.

  • GSTR-9: Annual return for regular taxpayers. Due by 31st December of the following financial year.
  • GSTR-9C: Self-certified reconciliation statement (if turnover exceeds ₹5 Crore). Due by 31st December.

GST Filing Dates and Penalties

Missing your deadlines can be costly. There is a direct relationship between gst filing dates and penalties. If a taxpayer fails to file their returns on or before the specified due date, they are liable to pay a late fee alongside interest on the pending tax amount.

Late Fee Structure

For Nil Returns (No Tax Liability): ₹20 per day (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST) of delay.

For Regular Returns: ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) of delay.

Note: The maximum late fee is capped based on the taxpayer's turnover to provide relief to small businesses.

Interest on Late Payment

If you fail to pay your GST liability on time, interest is charged at the rate of 18% per annum. This is calculated from the day following the due date until the date the payment is actually made.
