GST Compliance Guide

What is a GSTR-1 Error Report & Why Does It Happen?

When you upload your monthly or quarterly GSTR-1 return to the GST Portal (via an offline JSON or third-party accounting tool), the GSTN processing engine performs rigorous multi-point validation checks on every invoice, credit note, e-commerce record, and HSN entry.

If any record fails government validation rules—such as an inactive buyer GSTIN, invalid state tax rate, or missing state-specific e-commerce operator ID—the portal assigns your return a status of "Processed with Error". The portal accepts all valid records, while bundling only the rejected rows into a downloadable Error Report (.zip or .json file).

Because raw JSON files contain deeply nested arrays, machine codes (e.g. RET11420, RET11404), and internal keys (supeco, clttx, inum), opening them directly in Notepad or text editors is practically impossible to decipher. OkayGST’s Error Report Analyzer instantly converts raw JSON into human-readable data tables with step-by-step resolution steps.

Error Code Category GST Portal Error Message Root Cause & Resolution
RET11420 Table 14(a) The GSTIN is invalid. Please enter a valid Ecommerce GSTIN. Happens when an e-commerce seller (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho) enters a buyer GSTIN, head-office GSTIN, or mismatched state GSTIN. In Table 14(a), you must enter the state-specific ECO GSTIN matching your operating state.
RET11404 / RET191113 Table 4A (B2B) The GSTIN is invalid or inactive. Please enter an active GSTIN. The buyer's GST registration was cancelled, suspended, or mistyped. Verify buyer GSTIN on the portal; if cancelled prior to the invoice date, reclassify the invoice to B2C Small (Table 7).
RET11412 Table 12 (HSN) Invalid HSN/SAC code. Minimum 4 or 6 digit code required. Taxpayers with turnover > ₹5 Cr must report 6-digit HSNs; up to ₹5 Cr requires 4 digits. Services must start with 99. Replace invalid codes using OkayGST's auto-enriched HSN master directory.
RET11406 / RET191114 B2B / CDNR Invoice date cannot be greater than filing date or out of period. The invoice date falls outside allowed financial year limits or in a future month. Correct the invoice date in your accounting system to fall within the active return period.
RET11408 / RET191133 B2B Invoices Duplicate Invoice Number. Invoice has already been recorded. An invoice with this exact invoice number was already uploaded and accepted in an earlier filing within this financial year. If modifying an existing invoice, report it in Table 9A (Amendments) instead.

"Processed with Error" indicates that the GST Portal accepted the valid records in your return, but rejected one or more specific invoices or line items due to validation failures. Common causes include inactive buyer GSTINs (RET11404), mismatched state Ecommerce Operator GSTINs in Table 14 (RET11420), invalid HSN codes (RET11412), or duplicate invoice numbers (RET11408).
In Table 14(a), you must report the state-specific GSTIN of the E-Commerce Operator (Amazon, Flipkart, or Meesho) matching the operating state of your business. For example, if your business operates in Maharashtra (State 27), you must use Amazon's Maharashtra GSTIN (27AAICA3918J1CZ), not their head office or another state's GSTIN. Do not enter a buyer's GSTIN.

No. When you upload a corrected JSON file containing the rejected invoices, the GST Portal simply adds the newly validated records to your return. As long as you maintain the same invoice numbers and dates, accepted invoices will not be duplicated.
